Sherese Campbell, Founder
Sixteen years ago, Sherese Campbell endeavored to create a dance company capable of embodying her ambitious and eclectic artistic vision. Committed to forming a company that would reflect her own experiences, as well as the diverse lives of its dancers, Ms. Campbell combined the principles of her artistic training with a personal goal to positively affect social change. In 1994, Ms. Campbell established City Dance, Inc. bringing together dancers from a myriad of ethnic and cultural backgrounds from the city of Houston; her dream of a multi-ethnic, socially conscious and artistically vibrant company became a reality.
Sherese Campbell is a graduate of Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. She has trained under masters Larry Long, Lou Conte, and Maria Tallchief and studied with the Ruth Page Foundation of Dance in Chicago, Illinois. Later, she worked as a scholarship student with the Dance Theater of Harlem in the 1970's before touring Europe and the United States as a professional dancer and teacher with one of Finland's premiere dancing institutions in the 1980's. Before realizing her dream in City Dance, Inc., Ms. Campbell chaired the dance department at Episcopal High School in Houston and was a dance instructor at Prairie View A & M University in Prairie View, TX. Ms. Campbell is regarded by many in the dance community as one of the most inspiring and motivational dance teachers in Houston today.
Ms. Campbell has watched her company grow and evolve, as she constantly strives to teach students and dancers to find their own voices along the way.
